

TRB Monthly Meeting – Dan Schmehl – Small Hive Beetles

Members and Friends, please join us on September 15 for our Membership Meeting and educational session. This will be an IN PERSON and ZOOM meeting at the University of Missouri Extension Center at 260 Brown Road in St. Peters. The club meeting will begin at 7:00. You can come early – 6:00 PM – for Q&A with experienced beekeepers. Snacks are welcome!

This meeting will feature Dr. Dan Schmehl who will present a talk about Small Hive Beetles. Dan has presented to TRB members many times. He is a Principal Scientist and pollinator specialist at Bayer CropScience, based in Chesterfield, Missouri, USA. He has a BS degree in Biology from Messiah College (2007) and a PhD in Entomology from Penn State University (2013) with a specialization in Apiculture. After graduate school, Dan joined the laboratory of Dr. Jamie Ellis at the University of Florida where he specialized in pesticide studies and Varroa management. He joined Bayer in 2015 with primary responsibilities for pesticide safety evaluations and support of Bayer bee health research initiatives. Dan supports these core responsibilities by developing and designing new methodologies and conducting toxicology studies to support the registration of compounds. He also works with his business to identify environmentally sustainable use rates and patterns, application timing, and risk mitigation strategies for Bayer’s crop protection portfolio.
