PRESENTER INFORMATION:
As a boy, Dave Loftin watched his grandfather tending beehives. Dave’s first opportunity with bees of his own came after college when he found a swarm in a whiskey barrel at a garden supply store in Rochester, NY. He found local beekeepers to ask advice from and soon joined the Rochester Beekeepers Club. Back then, Dr. Richard Taylor was a local professor and frequent speaker at the club. Dave learned how to produce comb honey as well as many other things from him.
These days, Dave lives on 10 acres outside Nixa, Missouri with his wife Paula. The property has several varieties of trees beneficial to honeybees. Dave is actively planting more varieties of trees and other plants for pollinators. He is a member of the Bees Alive Club in Nixa, the Beekeeping Association of the Ozarks, and the Missouri State Beekeepers.
Ray Hewitt is a Master Beekeeper certified through the University of Florida. This credential complements a journey in beekeeping that began more than 50 years ago at his father’s side on his family’s Honey Top Farm in southern Vermont. Having kept bees in both the cold, short-season climate of the Northeast and the long, pest-heavy seasons of the Southeast, Ray brings a unique, well-rounded understanding of American beekeeping across two very different regions.
Today, Ray owns Honey Top Bees in Chapin, South Carolina, where he provides beekeeping classes, nucs, queens, and honey. A committed educator, he mentors beekeepers nationwide, has produced a comprehensive online video course, and shares practical instruction on his YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/@honeytopbees).
He currently serves as President of the SC Midstate Beekeepers Association and sits on the board of directors for the South Carolina State Beekeepers Association.
Tom and Melissa Sostman began their beekeeping adventure in 2017, focusing on education to learn successful beekeeping methods. While their Fall 2018 attempt with a captured swarm failed (the bees absconded), they achieved success the following year. In Spring 2019, they established three initial colonies (two nucleus colonies and one package) and expanded to 8 colonies by the end of the season. After successfully overwintering those 8 and growing to 16, Tom and Melissa have consistently doubled and tripled their colony count each year. They now oversee 200+ colonies spread across seven apiaries in Eastern Franklin County, Missouri.
